VICO LAKE NATURAL RESERVOIR ****** LA RISERVA NATURALE DEL LAGO DI VICO

Vico Lake NATURAL RESERVOIR is located right between the Cimini Mountains, which hawe been created by vulcanic activities. For its several and peculiar natural characteristics, the vulcano area is includes many locations with great naturalistic value , unique in Lazio and in Italy.

The great variety of ecosystems of the natural Reservoir atmosphere includes the "depressed" beech forest (surrounding Mount Venere), swampy and lacustrine habitats. It is located in the Caprarola Country, a very important village also known because the historical artistic value of the Farnese Palace: Alessandro Farnese's majestic, sixteenth-century residence

The lake, of volcanic origin and immersed in the Cimini Mountains, Monti Cimini, preserves its original aspect of great beauty. Protective fauna havens and natural parks, constitute a fascinating integration of the route .It is situated a few kilometres from Ronciglione and Caprarola .From June to September there are restaurants that offer a characteristic Farnesian menu with dishes inspired from the Renaissance cuisine of central Italy.

The waters of this lake, called by the ancients Lacus Ciminus (Virg. Aen. VIII.697; Sil. Ital. VIII.493), are said to cover a town called Succinium, or Saccumum, engulfed by an earthquake (Ammian. Marcell. XVII.7.13; Sotion. de Mir. Font.).The latter writer states the same of the Lacus Sabatinus, or Lago Bracciano. The lake is evidently the crater of an extinct vulcano. Fable, however, gives it another origin. When Hercules was on this mount, he was begged by the inhabitants to give them some proof of his marvellous strength; whereon he drove an iron bar deep into the earth. When they had tried in vain to stir it, they besought the hero to draw it forth, which he did; but an immense flood of water welled up from the hole, and formed the Ciminian Lake. Serv. Aen. VII.697. Strabo (V. p226) and Columella (de Re Rust. VIII.16) say this lake abounded in fish and water-fowl.
